When we moved from the U.S.
to Western Thailand in the 1991
We thought we were retiring.
The day a hunter walked with a baby gibbon
we realized we are starting a second carrier.
The baby ape, who we named Chester,
initiated us into the world of the Gibbons.
Most of the gibbons now living with us on
William E. Deters Foundation are refugees from
the profitable trade. Some were severely neglected,
other physically abused. Here are nurse them
back to health and provide them with
the space and nutrition.
The Foundation was established on June 16, 2003
in memory of Mr. William E. Deters who was
the founder of Highland Farm in 1991,
which became a sanctuary in 1996.
